Overview

The trek’s location—across from the triple-peaked Bhagirathi massif, at the base of the formerly revered Indian Matterhorn, Mt. Shivling—contributes just as much to its fame as the expanse of the verdant meadows of Tapovan and the unadulterated wonder and spirit of Gomukh.

The Gomukh Tapovan hike is a trip rather than just a hike. It is a voyage not only because of its holiness and passage through a land full of legends around every corner, but also because it is the source of the Ganga, a fierce river that travels 2700 kilometers on its own to provide the raw power and sacred energy necessary to feed an entire nation. Gomukh is recognized as the source of this immense river and the beginning of its global journey. Tapovan has a significance of its own. With the magnetic energy of the place at the foot of some of the most reverential and indomitable mountains of the Garhwal range, each of which hold a special place in our age-old mythology, remains a place of choice for the spiritual yogis to go into long-term meditation despite the harsh conditions of the altitude. It also forms the base camp for some of the most difficult climbs in Garhwal Range of Himalayas like Mt. Shivling and Mt. Kedar Dome.

This walk begins in the sacred mountain village of Gangotri and travels through a breathtaking variety of scenery, from the verdant forests of Chirbasa to the vast expanses of Tapovan.

The journey enters the Greater Himalayas, winds through the boundaries of Gangotri National Park, and rises to a maximum elevation of 4,463 meters, putting you in front of the entire face of Shivling and the Bhagirathi sisters, as well as breathtaking scenery. Not only do you see the summits, but you also feel the entire power of these mountains as they rise in an unhindered and awe-inspiring panorama from toe to head. Even better, very few people actually visit this trail, which makes it quite beautiful. It is a little-traveled, uncrowded area.

This journey is best done in the pre-monsoon months of April through June and the post-monsoon months of September through October. Continue reading this page for additional trek details.
