Gaumukh Tapovan Trek

The trek commences from Gangotri, a mountain city on the banks of the River Bhagirathi. According to legend, this is where Goddess Ganga descended when Lord Shiva released the river from his hair locks.
Gangotri lies at an altitude of 3,415 meters and is approximately 245 kilometers away from Dehradun, the closest city with an airport.
If you’ve signed up with Bikat for a drive from Dehradun to Gangotri, the day starts early. Assemble at the meeting point by 7 AM for the 8-9 hour drive to Gangotri.
Leaving early ensures enough rest for the upcoming days and accounts for unpredictable mountain roads. Arriving before dark is advisable.

Today marks the first day of the actual trek. After an early breakfast, we head towards Gomukh, the snout of the Gangotri glacier.
Our destination for the day is Chirbasa, situated at an altitude of 3,600 meters. The name translates to “home of pine” in the local language.
The trek to Chirbasa takes approximately 4 hours. Along the way, you’ll walk alongside the roaring Bhagirathi River, its refreshing spirit keeping your gait lively.

After a refreshing stay in Chirbasa, you’ll embark on a 5-kilometer trek to Bhojwasa.
The name “Bhojwasa” translates to the “home of birch trees” in the local language.
As you ascend, the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation. The trail becomes barren and desolate, offering a unique experience.
Along the way, feast your eyes on the impressive Bhagirathi range of peaks, standing tall against the sky.
Since you covered a significant distance on the previous day, today’s trek is not overly strenuous.
Expect to reach the campsite by the river at Bhojwasa by lunchtime.
As the day draws to a close, treat yourself to the mesmerizing sunset over the spectacular Bhagirathi range—a perfect way to end the day.

Brace yourself for the big day! After waking up to the majestic view of the Bhagirathi peaks, you’ll set out for your next campsite.
The journey begins by crossing the snout of the Gangotri glacier, glimpses of which you saw on the way yesterday.
Walking alongside the companion River Bhagirathi, you’ll reach Gomukh. Curiously named the “mouth of the cow,” Gomukh is the source of the holy River Ganga.
Spend some time exploring the region around Gomukh, marveling at its unique appearance.
From here, the trail leads to Tapovan, one of the finest high-altitude alpine meadows in the area.
The path becomes steeper as you traverse moraine-rich glaciers. But fear not—the widening view of the surrounding peaks will keep you motivated.
Tapovan, nestled at the base of Shivling Peak, awaits you. Here, freshwater streams crisscross the meadows, and wildflowers adorn the landscape.
Keep an eye out for Bharal (blue mountain goats) gracefully navigating the mountain ridges.
And the backdrop? Magnificent views of Bhagirathi I, II, and III.
It’s no wonder that Tapovan remains one of the most preferred destinations for trekkers seeking both adventure and natural beauty.

As you retrace your steps, the familiar terrain welcomes you. The trek from Tapovan (4,460 meters) to Bhojwasa (3,775 meters) covers a distance of 6 kilometers.
The path you’ve already trodden holds memories and stories, making this part of the journey both nostalgic and comforting.
Enjoy the scenic beauty once again as you descend toward Bhojwasa, the “home of birch trees.”

Today’s trek takes you from Bhojwasa back to Gangotri (3,415 meters).
You’ll skip Chirbasa on your way down and head directly to Gangotri.
The trail retraces the path you took on your ascent, but this time, it’s a different perspective—a downhill journey with fresh insights.
The roaring Bhagirathi River continues to be your companion, its spirit echoing through the mountains.

Bid farewell to Gangotri as you embark on the long drive back to Dehradun.
The 245-kilometer journey will take you through winding mountain roads, lush valleys, and picturesque landscapes.
Plan your travel time accordingly, aiming to reach Dehradun by early evening.
Reflect on the incredible experiences you’ve had during the trek and carry them with you as cherished memories.

This buffer day is wisely set aside for unforeseen circumstances.
If bad weather or unexpected difficulties arise, preventing you from reaching your destination as planned, Day 8 becomes crucial.
In such cases, the reserve day ensures flexibility in your schedule.
Remember that if the buffer day is utilized, there’s a nominal fee of Rs. 2,500 per day (INR), collected by the Trek Leader.
